Children's Code

Version 2026-10-07. This page describes what the product does today. It is not a substitute for a lawyer reviewing it before launch.

Why this page exists

Learn with Zidni is built for children as well as adults. The UK Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children's Code) applies if under-18s are likely users. US COPPA applies because the kids zone is directed at children under 13. This page maps those duties onto what the code does today. It is a technical description, not legal advice.

In the product

  • Only an adult can create a login. Signup refuses to continue unless they confirm they are 18 or over.
  • A child profile stores a first name, an avatar key and an age band. There is no child email, photo, date of birth or behavioural advertising profile.
  • Adult content is not selected with a zone parameter from the browser. The server uses the profile's age band.
  • The parent area, where settings would live, asks for the parent PIN again.
  • Learner screens use a link component that only accepts paths on this site.
  • There is no messaging, comments, public profile or upload.
  • Journal rows have no database policy a login token can read, including the parent's.
  • There are no ads, no pixels and no analytics that profile a child.
  • High-privacy defaults are written when a child profile is created, including read-aloud on.

Not done yet

  • Verifiable parental consent for collecting a child's first name is not implemented. The adult checkbox is not that method. [LAWYER: choose the method before a child profile can be created in production.]
  • A published children's privacy notice written for a child to read is not separate from the adult privacy notice.
  • The ICO data protection fee ([ICO REGISTRATION NUMBER]) is an off-code registration. It is not paid from this repository.
  • Connected toys, geolocation and nudge techniques are absent. Keep them absent. A child profile must never see a purchase prompt.
